Powerful Purses is a unique and exciting panelist annual fundraising event featuring Northwood University honorees who have had ground-breaking careers in leadership, community, technology and public policy. 

Powerful Purses is a vision that became reality through leadership collaboration, successful partnering, and the dedication of committee volunteers and local real estate industry professionals, along with the financial support of our generous sponsors.  The results of these coordinated efforts and philanthropic endeavors will help to offer a new lease on life to others within our community.

Karen Borta
CBS 11 News Anchor

Karen Borta is an award-winning journalist who is recognized as a leading television news anchor in the Dallas-Fort Worth television news marketplace.

Karen has also served as an anchor and reporter at WTVT-TV in Tampa, Florida, KRBK-TV in Sacramento, California, and KECN-TV in Waco, Texas.

Karen has received numerous journalism awards, including regional Emmys, Press Club of Dallas Katie Awards and the Association of Woman Journalists' Vivian J. Castleberry Award.  She is also a member of the CBS 11 team in Dallas-Fort Worth honored by the Radio-Television News Directors Association with the Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence in 2006.

Karen is a graduate of the University of Texas-Arlington and is member of the UTA Alumni Association, as well as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.  Karen has received UTA's Distinguished Alumni Service Award.  In addition, she has been honored by numerous charitable and civic organizations, including Mi Escuelita, Cook Children's Medical Center and the Baylor Sammon Breast Cancer Center.

Terry Neese is recognized as one of Fortune magazine's "Power 30" for her Company's programs that teach women business owners to affect change through involvement in public policy.  Her book, "Empowering Women" has received national acclaim, as her work with NAWBO, WIPP, the NCPA, the U.S. Afghanistan Women's Council, and National Women's Business Council.  She has also served as Director of the United States Mint


Dr. Marti Carlin
Director, Community Affairs

T. Boone Pickens Foundation & Owner, Pax-N-Stax; Northwood University Honorary Doctorate, 2011.

Marti Carlin is a leader with the nationally recognized T. Boone Pickens Foundation that provides tens of millions of dollars in grants for causes ranging from medical research, education, entrepreneurial processes, conversation and public policy initiatives.  She has created and managed several companies to serve children and support schools as well as the Pax-N-Stax company, which produces the organizational tool for moving and storing office items.
